Workers Of LASPOTECH Embark On Indefinite Strike

Workers at the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) have begun an indefinite strike. A copy of the strike notice by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), LASPOTECH chapter, said the strike was with effect from August 1. The notice said the strike would “remain indefinite, total and comprehensive until the demands of the unions were met.” The strike also affects other sister unions of ASUP — the Non-Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (NASUP) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnic (SSANIP). The notice said the unions resumed their suspended strike, due to a failure by the institution’s management to meet their demands following a month grace given. According to the notice, the Lagos State Government had intervened in the strike by the unions through the House of Assembly Committee on Education and that was why it was suspended then. “Congress had unanimously resolved that the committee that was to be set up by the House Committee on Education to find a lasting solution to the issues of migration arrears be given till 31st July 2017. “Failure of which the union will resume its suspended strike without notice. “It is rather sad to inform you that after the committee has identified substantial amount to pay 12 months as the first tranche, the management turned in a document from National Board of Technical Education (NBTE) to truncate an already laid process for payment,” it said.

PROCLAMATION PROSCRIBING ALL ACTIVITIES OF THE ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF UNIVERSITIES (ASUU) IN KOGI STATE UNIVERSITY, ANYIGBA

Whereas the Kogi State Government:

1. respects the rights of all citizens to responsible association and agitations within the norms of a democratic society.

2. is working to resolve all issues relating to adequacy and frequency of remuneration for all categories of Civil Servants in the State.

3. Understands the rights of labour unions in relation to the responsibilities of  the owners/proprietors of tertiary academic institutions.

The Kogi State Government notes with dismay that:

1. the industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kogi State University, Anyigba (ASUU, KSU) is now going into its 7th month.

2. Government, by a combination of appeasement and resistance has endeavored without success to bring ASUU, KSU to a middle ground.

3. Government, by her own conservative estimates and in the interest of all stakeholders, most importantly the students, has met at least 90% of ASUU, KSU's many demands, especially the students.

4. that ASUU, KSU has refused to recognize industrial relations as 'work in progress' and insists on continuing her strike indefinitely.
5. In defiance of empathy and amicable settlement, and in further confirmation of their resolve not to return to work any time soon, the Chairman (Acting) of ASUU, KSU publicly declared that no matter the extent to which Government makes efforts to meet their demands, strikes can and will be called at any time, even at the behest of external actors.
6. the effect of the strike on all students of KSU is increasingly dire in the extreme.

The Kogi State Government is now forced to conclude that:

1. ASUU, KSU's insistence on continuing her strike action even though Government has paid her members' salaries, earned allowances and other benefits up-to-date (June, 2017) is both unreasonable and unacceptable.

2. ASUU, KSU and her members, for no justifiable cause, have deliberately persisted in the breach of their responsibilities as employees of the Kogi State Government working in an institution founded to provide essential services, to wit, education.

3. ASUU, KSU's activities related to their strike of about 7 months have obstructed and disrupted the provision of essential services, to wit, education thereby occasioning psychological trauma and irrecoverable loss to those intended lawful recipients of same.

ACCORDINGLY, THE KOGI STATE GOVERNMENT HEREBY MAKES PROCLAMATION AND DECLARES ALL ACTIVITIES OF THE ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF UNIVERSITIES (ASUU) IN KOGI STATE UNIVERSITY, ANYIGBA PROSCRIBED EFFECTIVE THIS 19TH DAY OF JULY, 2017.

Consequently, the Governing Council of the Kogi State University, Anyigba, the Management of the Institution and the Kogi State Ministry of Education are hereby directed to:

1. Deem all academic staff of the Institution who do not resume their normal academic activities immediately as having resigned from the employment of the Kogi State Government and the University, and to treat them accordingly.

2. Take steps to immediately find and engage suitable replacements for all crucial staff vacancies, including those who have left, may wish to leave or who are deemed to have left the service of the Kogi State Government and the University pursuant upon this Proclamation.

3. Start the process of employing all categories of academic staff required by the Institution based on need assessment.

All law enforcement and security agencies in Kogi State are hereby directed to remain vigilant as usual and be proactive in preventing any breakdown of law and order in any part of Kogi State, whether consequent on this proclamation, or for any reason whatsoever.

Government tenders an apology to all students of Kogi State University and their parents for every inconvenience occasioned by the protracted strike action by ASUU, KSU while commending their resilience and patience through it all.

Government commits to students of Kogi State University, Anyigba and their parents/guardians to ensure uninterrupted academic calendar henceforth, as enjoyed by other tertiary institutions which have earlier proscribed ASUU or otherwise disallowed its operation on their campus.

Government states her intention to meet her duties and obligations to all her tertiary institutions and every law abiding staff promptly.

Made this 19th day of July, 2017.

Signed:

YAHAYA BELLO
EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR, KOGI STATE

American Universiity Of Nigeria (AUN) Celebrates I Best Graduate, Onyinye

American University of Nigeria (AUN) has held its first Fair to attract prospective students while celebrating its best graduate of 2017, Ms Immaculata Onyinye Onuigbo in Abuja last weekend. The fair hosted by the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation provided an opportunity for young people to learn about its scholarships. Onyinye who is one of the 24 merit scholars of the Yar’Adua Foundation recently emerged as the 2017 Valedictorian as a Petroleum Chemistry graduate from AUN. In her advice to the prospective students, she challenged them to be resilient and develop a passion for the course they have chosen. “If you have passion or love what you are studying, it won’t be a challenge to you and success will come your way,” she said. The Director General of the Foundation, Mrs Jacqueline Farris who explained the merit scholarship said, 24 exceptional graduating pupils were picked from schools across the country since 2005 and were enrolled in AUN Academy for their secondary education. She said upon graduation, 12 were enrolled into AUN and the 12 others into federal universities in Nigeria. Three of those in AUN graduated recently with Onyinye emerging as the overall best of the university for 2017, Mrs. Farris said. The Merit Scholarship was conceived by Hajiya Binta Yar’Adua (wife of Late Shehu Musa Yar’Adua), a board member of the Foundation, while the scholars were sponsored through the Foundation’s endowment fund. Upon graduation, they await placement for their one year National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC), she noted. Assistant Vice President for Recruitment and Marketing, Julius Ayuk Tabe said the Fair was a platform for people seeking information about academic opportunities in the technology-intensive university. “Learning in the 21st century is a shared experience within and outside the classroom. Our students want to display a whole range of AUN’s out-of-classroom digital resources which define, in character and content, the perfect trend of resource personality,” he explained. Some of the secondary school students in attendance including those from the AUN Academy told YOUTHVILLE they will love to be admitted into the university with some noting that would achieve a feat greater than that of Immaculate, the best graduate of 2017. AUN President, Dr. Dawn Dekle lauded the Yar’Adua Foundation for initiating such long term scholarships for gifted students as part of contributing to the development of the country. She said the success of the university lies in professionalism and its distinct style of pushing students towards academic excellence. Dr. Dekle challenged other universities to adopt the model if they want to produce more world class graduates. The President who assumed office recently assured of working with the university team to build of the foundations already laid adding through the ‘shared governance’ approach which she said entails that everyone including the students contributed to the process of decision making.

Kogi Varsity Students Ask Lecturers To Vacate School Premises

It will be recalled that the Academic Staff Union of University ASUU KSU chapter resolved in their meeting yesterday that there is no going back in the ongoing strike.

On this note, some anonymous aggrieved students of the institution have released a warning to all lecturers after the ASUU meeting yesterday to vacate from the staff quarters early today.

These aggrieved students who gathered early this morning at Idachaba LT to press home their demands which is reopening of the institution have been urged to exercise patience.

The Chief security Official (CSO)  of the university addressed the aggrieved students to be calm and promised that everything will be resolved and all academic activities will resume fully on Monday the 17th of July, 2017. The CSO who was interrupted with a solidarity song by all the students was later allowed to finally say something.

Early this morning, troop of Army was at Idachaba Lecture Theater to monitor the environment. although we don't know the reason behind their visit but our correspondence Yinka Oluwafemi who was at the venue said it was because of the planned peaceful protest and the treat to the lecturer's by the students.

In another news, KSU Digital centre  is still under locked as at the time of compiling this news.

We spoke with one of the staff of the digital centre on phone and he said "It's being locked due to security threat".

Mostly all the newly admitted students who were affected with the online screening exercise which need to be rectified at the digital centre were not attended to and this made them returned back to their various lodges.

After the CSO addressed, the Chairman of JCC Comrade Attaja and the Igala Student's Association (ISA)  urged all the student's to remain calm and wait till Monday and also promised that if nothing is done, they will stage a protest.

Our correspondence also met with a man who refused to disclose his identity. When asked what the students should do if academic activities did not kick starts on Monday. But he said "He should be arrested".

It will be recalled that after ASUU Marathon meeting yesterday, the University Management have released a memo urging ASUU to resume academic activities and also direct all Dean's of Faculties and Provost of College of Health to take attendance.

NOUN Graduates Now Eligible for NYSC And Law School

Senate has passed an amendment to the law establishing the National Open University, which will make graduates of the institution eligible for mobilisation by the National Youth Service Corps and to attend the Nigerian Law School.
The passage followed the adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund on the ‘Bill for An Act to Amend the National Open University Act Cap N6 LFN 1983 (Amendment) Bill 2017’ by the lawmakers at the plenary on Thursday.
In the report, the Senate panel stated that the amendment to the National Open University of Nigeria Act was to bring the institution at par with the regular universities in the country.
The report said, “The objectives of the bill are as follows: firstly, to amend the existing legislation with a view to removing the perception of the public about the university in respect of the word ‘correspondence,’ which gives the impression that the university is not a full-time university and, as such, seen as part-time.
“These two concepts – correspondence and part-time – significantly affect the way the public views the programs run by the university. This has been the reason why the Law graduates of the school are not admitted into the Nigerian Law School as well as the reason for the non-inclusion of the graduates of the university into the National Youth Service Corps scheme.
“Secondly, to include information and Communication Technology as another means of providing tuition towards the advancement of learning throughout Nigeria. The National Open University, as currently run, depends critically on virtual learning and students’ individual research, hence, the need for improvement and introduction of helpful learning tools as presented by ICT. This will further deal with the challenge of limited access in the tertiary education sector.”

A reliable source closed to the team confirmed the arrest in Lagos on Friday.

Kime was said to have been released by her abductors on June 16 after payment of ransom.
IRT operatives were deployed to Port Harcourt to check the unending spate of abductions, cult activities and other crimes in the oil-rich state.
“On June 27, at about 11.40 a.m., the team arrested the gang leader of the kidnappers, one Gift Attah, 26, popularly known as Okwulogu at Rumuakunde Community in the Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers.

“Exhibits recovered from him include the victim’s phone and his share from the ransom, the sum of N450, 000.
“The suspect’s capture led to the arrest of other gang members,” the source stated.
The arrested kidnappers also confessed to the police how they entered the church premises and kidnapped Kime, holding her hostage until the ransom was paid.
It was also learnt that the UNIPORT student was used as errand boy and armourer to the abductors.
Another member of the gang was identified simply as “Daddy Stephen’’, alias Marshall, while a 48-year-old man, Atayero Abiodun, from Osun, was preparing charms for the abductors.
